Lecture Recording FAQs

AUDIO RECORDINGS

All audio recordings are hosted on the Audio Lecture Recordings website.

VIDEO RECORDINGS

ITS will create a “Channel” in Mediasite for your course. Faculty have the option of embedding this channel or individual videos to Canvas. Direct links to channels or individual videos can also be shared with the students.

AUDIO RECORDINGS

By default, all audio recordings are restricted to the professor of the course. To ensure that your students have access to recordings, please make sure to indicate the maillist for your course when submitting your request.

Audio recordings cannot be made public.

VIDEO RECORDINGS 

By default, all video recordings are restricted to the professor of the course. These videos are hosted on Mediasite and allows faculty to customize their preferred security settings. To ensure that your students have access to recordings, please make sure to indicate the maillist for your course when submitting your request. AUDIO RECORDINGS

By default, audio files are only available as downloads for students. There is no way to prevent these audio recordings from being saved as a file.

VIDEO RECORDINGS

By default, video files are not available as downloads for students. Faculty members can configure their videos in MyMediasite so that they provide a download link.

AUDIO RECORDINGS

There is no simple way to edit the audio recordings. If there is a serious problem with the recording, ITS can replace the file on the server with a new copy that is provided by the professor. ITS cannot provide editing service for the new audio file. For assistance with editing, please contact the Centre for Educational Excellence.

VIDEO RECORDINGS

MyMediasite provides professors with a tool to edit their recordings. The tool runs in the web browser and does not require installation of software. See How to Edit your Mediasite Videos like a Pro.

MyMediasite provides professors with access to recording software for use on your computer. Mediasite Mosaic is ideal for recording your webcam, microphone and computer screen. This program must be installed onto your computer.

If you a taught a course in the last 12 months and it was recorded through the ITS Lecture Recording service, ITS will have the original copies of these recordings.

You can request to have these recordings retained for an upcoming semester by filling out our Request Access to Archived Lecture Recordings form.

ITS cannot provide closed-captions for you. Please contact the Centre for Educational Excellence or the Centre for Accessible Learning to learn more about accessing transcription and/or captioning services. 

Once you have the appropriate file(s) for your recording, they can be added in the following ways:

AUDIO RECORDINGS

Audio recordings can only support closed-captions if the audio recordings are uploaded to MyMediasite. To add your SRT file, follow the same instructions as you would for video recordings. 

VIDEO RECORDINGS

MyMediasite allows you to add a closed-captioning file to your recording. See Manually upload captions.

SUPPORTED FILE FORMATS

Mediasite only supports Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange (SAMI), SubRip (SRT), and Distribution Format Exchange Profile (DFXP).

Lecture Recording schedules are based off the class times listed in SFU Outlines and cannot be altered for the duration of the semester.

If you would like to alter the recording time for a single class, simply fill out the “Single-Day Request” portion of the Lecture Recording Request form.

If you need to alter the recording time for multiple days of class, please fill out a separate request form for each day that will be affected. It is your responsibility to ensure that the classroom has been reserved for you during the requested times.

The recording systems in rooms do not prevent you from recording copyrighted materials. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are allowed to record any content that is not yours.
