Overview
This article explains how to set up SFU MFA on Apple Password’s app which is available for devices running iOS 18.0 and newer.
Advantages of using Apple's Passwords app
- The Passwords app is provided by Apple and does not require installing a third-party app from the App Store.
- After restoring from an iCloud backup, the new iPhone will continue working as a registered MFA device and re-registration is not required.
- SFU MFA codes on the Safari web browser will be auto filled by the Passwords app.
System Requirements
- The Passwords app requires iOS 18.0 or later
- (Optional) Having another device, such as a laptop or tablet, will make setup easier
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Log into the MFA portal
On your computer:
-
Visit mfa.sfu.ca and sign in using your SFU computing ID and password. If you already have an MFA device registered, you may be asked to enter the code.
-
Select Add Mobile Device, then Continue. If you already have an MFA device setup, select Add MFA Device first.

Step 2: Set up the Passwords App
On your iPhone:
-
Open the Camera app and scan the QR code on your computer screen. A link will appear for you to open the Passwords app.

If you can't use your phone's camera
If you can’t use the camera, click Can’t scan the QR Code? under the QR code and copy down the key. Open the Passwords app, select Codes, tap +, and enter the key into the Setup Key field. Then tap Use Setup Key.
-
If you've signed into your SFU account and saved your SFU credentials on your iPhone before, search for CAS.SFU.CA and tap the entry that corresponds to your SFU computing ID. The Verification Code (MFA code) will appear.

If there isn’t an entry, add a new one by selecting + and enter the following information. Then tap Save:

- Website or label: CAS.SFU.CA
- User Name: SFU computing ID (ex. kipling)
- Password: SFU password
On your computer:
- Enter the 6-digit verification code into Step 3 of the MFA registration. You can also give this registration a name (ex. phone model or app name).

Step 3: Save a copy of your emergency codes
Your emergency codes will appear after successful registration. We recommend that you save a copy of your emergency codes outside of your device in the case that it gets damaged or goes missing.

Retrieve your SFU MFA codes
To retrieve your SFU MFA codes in the Passwords app:
- Open the Passwords app and select Code.
- Your MFA codes will appear on screen.

Change your default MFA device
If you have more than one MFA device, we recommend setting the Passwords app as the default MFA authenticator for your account. You can also remove other registered devices.
