Overview
Microsoft (MS) Teams Phone is a software-based calling solution that can be used on desktop computers, laptops and smartphones, providing the flexibility to make and receive calls anywhere, anytime, across devices. MS Teams Phone supported physical handsets are also available (see obtaining accessories section below.) MS Teams Phones is a feature within MS Teams which is already in use across the university for instant messaging, video conferencing and file sharing. MS Teams Phones is used for faculty and staff lines, general office lines and call flows.

How to request a line
To request a phone line, please have your departmental administrator submit a request through ServiceHub. Phone lines are funded through a central funding model.
Obtaining Accessories
Physical handsets or headset are funded by individual departments. It is not required to have a MS Teams Phones-certified headset. You can continue to use the audio setup you currently use for standard MS Teams or Zoom meetings - whether that is built-in speaker and microphone in your laptop, standard headphones, or an existing headset. Please follow your department standard equipment procurement process to obtain a headset.
Considerations when selecting a headset
- Audio Quality & Noise Cancellation: Built-in laptop audio works, but a dedicated headset significantly improves sound quality and filters out background noise.
- Privacy: If you work in a shared or open office environment, a headset helps keep your conversations private and minimizes distractions for colleagues.
- Mobility vs. Reliability:
- Wireless (Bluetooth/USB Dongle): Ideal if you need to move around during calls.
- Wired (USB): More cost-effective and never runs out of battery.
- Frequency of Use: If your role involves high call volumes, investing in a high-quality, ergonomic headset will greatly improve your daily comfort.
- Compatibility: Ensure the device connects seamlessly with your laptop. Look for the "Certified for Microsoft Teams" label for full feature integration.
